This past summer, I did the first ‘deep clean’ of the garbage jammed in my belly button. Mind you, I have always just pulled out the surface fluff, but one day I probed and could feel ‘the tip of the iceburg’ of the treasure buried deep in there. Extracting such human gold is not easy with a stubby forefinger. But what I eventually managed to mine out was nothing short of a time capsule of my navel’s life. The strands of loose hair, dirt, and lint probably could stretch the entire length of Chile. It was so cool, and gross.

Well, the famous hop-on, hop-off double decker bus is now a memory. The last ‘Routemaster’ finished its #36 route ending at Victoria station for the last time. They will be replaced by so-called ‘bendy-buses’ which articulate in the middle and are cheaper to run. The beauty of the Routemaster was its sleek lines when compared to the modern, boxy, coach-like replacements; also the convenience of hopping on and off whenever you felt like it, not having to wait for a bus stop. Alas, this required a conductor to collect fares in addition to the driver; which in these modern days is deemed redundant. There seems to be general apathy publicly, but there are quite a few times when on the modern bus -stuck in traffic on Oxford Street- that I wish I could just hop off and walk the final 100 yards, but no….
